Since centuries women are being subjected to violence at the hands of men in one way or the other. Manu said “YATHRA NARYANTHU PUJYANTHE RAMANTHE THATHRA DEVATAH” meaning thereby, where women are worshipped or respected, God will be happy there. But in practice, they are being tortured in many ways, demand of more dowry is one of the ways of torture to make the life of married women miserable. Our Constitution guaranteed several rights to women on par with men. But they are accessible only to women belonging to affluent strata of the society. In order to provide for more effective protection of the rights of women guaranteed under the Constitution, who are the victims of violence of any kind occurring within the family, the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (Act 43 of 2005) (with effect from 26-10-2006) and the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Rules, 2006 (with effect from 26-10-2006) have been enacted. Ever since, women are equipped with a powerful weapon to wage a relentless war for their emanfarcipation. Commentary on the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, authored by Justice P.S. Narayana and published by ALT Publications in the year 2009 has proved to be a valuable asset to legal fraternity.
