The world today is a man’s world, where woman is never a woman in her own right. She is first the daughter, next the wife, and the last the mother of man. The position of Indian women is no better when compared to other parts of the world.
There is universal agreement that personal laws, regardless of the community, are skewed against women. A Uniform Civil Code - which will cover the entire gamut of laws governing rights relating to property, marriage, divorce, maintenance, adoption and inheritance - has been most argued on behalf of women. Nothing has been done so far in the direction of a Uniform Civil Code except the introduction of a few new offences under the Indian Penal Code relating to the demands for dowry (Secs.304-B, 498-A, 376-A, 376-C and 376-D). 
Until 2005, a Hindu female was not treated as a coparcener entitled to a share in the joint family property along with her brothers, except in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, and Maharashtra where there was a limited admission of a daughter into the coparcenery,  subject to some conditions.  The initiative for treating a daughter in the same manner as a son first came through the efforts of Shri N.T. Rama Rao, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh through the Andhra Pradesh Amendment Act, 1986.  However, in the year 2005, Parliament itself amended the Hindu Succession Act by duly conferring the status of a coparcener on all daughters of Joint Hindu family  governed by the Mitakshara Law, incorporating Section 29(a).
We are now having the distinction of having a woman President and also woman Speaker of Lok Sabha. Let us hope that  the country will forge ahead and will be a leader of the nations of the world in the matters of liberation of woman.
In this book ‘Law relating to Women’, apart from the Socio Legal position of Women and Law in India focusing on the  relevant provisions  relating to women under the Indian Constitution, Indian Evidence Act, 1872, Indian Penal Code, Industrial & Labour Laws, International Instruments like CEDAW, ICCPR & ICESCR, we have covered the topics like Law relating to the Marriage, Divorce, Succession and Maintenance under relevant provisions of personal Laws with special emphasis on women and Domestic violence. This book provides a short cut to the students of the 3/5 year law degree course to enable them to get a broad understanding of the topics that would be covered under the revised syllabus.
